What is MyTeam?
MyTeam is a game mode in the NBA 2K series that allows you to build your own team, consisting of both past and present NBA players. To build your own custom, fantasy teams, you will need to collect player cards for play against the CPU for single player, and versus other human players online for multiplayer.
Note that you need to be connected to the Internet all the time to play MyTeam even if your intention is just to play against the CPU.
There are several different sub-modes that you can play in MyTeam. In NBA 2K20, these sub-modes are grouped into two – Single Player and Multiplayer.
Single Player sub-modes are the following:
- Triple Threat: Play 3-3 against the CPU with best trios in league history from each team.
- Domination: Play 5-on-5 with your best players against the CPU every NBA team from past and present.
- Challenges: Updated every week, play against the CPU with these dynamic game challenges to earn rewards for your team.
- Freestyle: Learn how to play with your players in a practice gym.
On the other hand, the sub-modes of Multiplayer are:
- MyTeam Unlimited: Play 5-on-5 against other players online randomly.
- Triple Threat Online: Play 3-3 against other players online randomly.
- Multiplayer Challenges: Updated every week, play against other players online randomly with head to head challenges.
- Play with Friends: Play unranked games against your friends.
Player Cards (and Coaches, Playbooks, and even Shoes) are graded by tiers:
- Bronze: 65-69 OVR
- Silver: 70-75 OVR
- Gold: 76-79 OVR
- Emerald: 80-83 OVR
- Sapphire: 84-86 OVR
- Ruby: 87-89 OVR
- Amethyst: 90-92 OVR
- Diamond: 93-95 OVR
- Pink Diamond: 96-98 OVR
- Galaxy Opal: 99 OVR
Obviously, the higher the tier, the better attributes the player has. Generally speaking, it’s around the Amethyst tier that players tend to be good in most aspects of the game (i.e. Outside Shooting, Defense, and Playmaking). Below that, and they’re either only good in one thing and flat-out bad at the rest, or they’re mediocre to ho-hum in general.
You must apply contracts to your players in order for them to play on your team; you can also apply shoes and badges to your players to boost their stats.
MyTeam has three different forms of currency, in the game that can be used to obtain players and other items:
- Locker Codes
VC (Virtual Currency)
VC is a currency for the purchase of Card Packs, which will contain Player Cards and other useful items such as Playbooks, Shoes that enhance player attributes, ‘consumable’ needs such as Contracts (which get used up for each card you use in each game) and cosmetic stuff like Courts, Uniforms, Balls, etc.
You can get VC by buying it with real money, as a reward for gameplay in other NBA 2K modes such as MyLeague or MyCareer, or in small amounts by ‘playing’ the NBA 2K mobile app.
MT (MyTeam Coins)
The MyTeam-only in-game currency is ‘MT’, which can be used to purchase all the cards in the game in the Auction House. Buying them from other players who are listing them for sale, basically.
The Auction House is the center of the MyTeam economy therefore is almost a whole game unto itself. For those who want to build strong teams, but not spend money, the Auction House is where you can spend time, instead, to make MT and buy cards. “Buy low, sell high”, basically. At least enough to profit after 2K takes it’s 10% fee out of all sales.
You can also use MT to purchase Contracts in the game menus, which is generally more economical than using Contract Cards for lower OVR (Overall) cards.
Tokens are rewarded for achieving goals in gameplay and also completing and locking-in card sets. Tokens can be used in the Rewards market, to purchase Rewards Players Cards.
You have to redeem for 10 cards of a tier before you can redeem for cards of the next tier. For instance, you can buy 10 Emerald Reward Players Cards before you can buy any Sapphire ones.
Locker codes give you a chance to acquire items such as Player Packs, MT, Tokens and Consumable Packs, without having to pay or beat an opponent in any of MyTeam’s sub-mode.

MyTeam is an exciting game mode in the 2K series and different people have different approaches to it. Some people, for example, don’t like the extremely competitive nature of playing against other people online, and only play vs. CPU. You can customize teams in other modes of 2K, but if one already has the cards one wants to use, in MyTeam, it’s way easier to change stuff around in your lineup any time you want.
